How the block 카 is built

카 is a side-by-side block: ㅋ takes the left part and ㅏ stands on the right.

Its middle line sits halfway down the slanting stroke of ㅋ.

With 카 (ka), with no final consonant the space under the pair stays empty; add one and the block becomes 칵 (kak), 칸 (kan), 칼 (kal) and so on.

How to read 카

카

Many loanwords start with it: 카드 (card), 카페 (cafe), 카메라 (camera).

For 카 (ka), say the consonant, then slide into the vowel: ㅋ then ㅏ makes ka.

Push a strong breath out as the back of the tongue releases the k; the puff is what separates 카 from the lighter 가.

1
First ㅋ

Draw a line to the right and turn down, the same as ㄱ. Then draw a short line across the middle, from left to right, touching the downstroke.

2
Next comes ㅏ (a)

A tall line on the right with a short arm leaving its middle.

In the case of 카 (ka), count four strokes for the full block, split as 2 for ㅋ and 2 for ㅏ.

Loanwords are the fastest way to practice 카: 카드, 카페, 카메라. Write each and say it with a strong k.

A common slip with 카

Learners often draw the middle line of ㅋ so long that it crosses the downstroke. Stop it where it meets the slanting line.

How 카 is used

Many words that start with 카 are borrowed from other languages, such as 카메라 (camera), 카페 (cafe) and 카드 (card), so the block is a handy flag for loanwords.

The opening consonant of this block is made with the back of the tongue, and its sound is like k with a strong puff, as in key.

With 카 (ka), six common endings turn this block into 칵 (kak), 칸 (kan), 칼 (kal), 캄 (kam), 캅 (kap), 캉 (kang).

For 카 (ka), the endings reduce to these sounds: ㄱ = k, ㄴ = n, ㄹ = l, ㅁ = m, ㅂ = p, ㅇ = ng.

Put ㄱ at the bottom of 카 for 칵 (kak), closing on a quiet k. Add ㄴ under 카 and you get 칸 (kan), closing on a hummed n. Put ㄹ at the bottom of 카 for 칼 (kal), closing on a tongue-tip l.

Add ㅁ under 카 and you get 캄 (kam), closing on a lip-closed m. Add ㅂ under 카 and you get 캅 (kap), closing on a lip-closed p. Add ㅇ under 카 and you get 캉 (kang), closing on the ng of song.

ㅋ with other vowels

Same opening, six vowels: 카 (ka), 커 (keo), 코 (ko), 쿠 (ku), 크 (keu), 키 (ki).

카 next to 차 and 타

Set 카 (ka) beside 타 (ta): the vowel ㅏ (a) is identical, and the difference lives in ㅋ versus ㅌ (tieut), a strong puff of air against a strong puff of air.

Before 카 in the starter row comes 차 (cha), whose consonant uses the teeth ridge for a strong, puffed burst.
