How to say ㅘ

와

With ㅘ (wa), start with rounded lips as for ㅗ and open quickly into ㅏ. ㅘ is like the wa in English 'want'.

ㅘ is a mixed vowel: the ㅗ part sits under the consonant and the ㅏ part stands on the right, so the consonant sits in the top left corner: 과, 화, 와.

Where ㅘ sits in a block

The two parts of ㅘ split up the space around the consonant. In 과 (gwa) one part runs underneath and the other stands at the right.

You will never see ㅘ (wa) without a consonant partner; at the start of a word the placeholder ㅇ gives 와 (wa).

ㅘ and ㅝ are the two w-vowels with an open sound. 와 joins ㅗ with ㅏ; 워 joins ㅜ with ㅓ. The small stroke on the left side shows which pair you have.

Learners sometimes write ㅏ first and squeeze ㅗ in afterwards. Write the ㅗ part first, then the ㅏ part.

Its closest neighbour is ㅝ (wo); compare the two in the table below.

Why ㅘ looks the way it does

ㅘ is ㅗ and ㅏ (a) written together, and its name is 와.

ㅘ (wa) is a compound vowel: it is two vowels written together, and the sound slides from the first part to the second.
