How to say ㅚ

외

Most speakers say ㅚ like ㅞ, the we in English 'wet'. A single rounded vowel is also recognised for ㅚ, but the we sound is accepted and common.

ㅚ is a mixed vowel: ㅗ under the consonant and ㅣ on the right. Beginner words include 회사 (company) and 외국 (foreign country).

Where ㅚ sits in a block

ㅚ (oe) frames the consonant on two sides, as the block 괴 (goe) shows.

A bare ㅚ (oe) sound needs a consonant in front, because Korean spelling always wants one: 외 (oe) uses the silent ㅇ.

회사 (company) and 웨이터 (waiter) start with nearly the same sound in modern speech. Remember which words take ㅚ from their spelling.

The romanization oe leads learners to say o + e in two beats. ㅚ is one syllable sound: 회 is closer to 'hweh'.

Its closest neighbour is ㅟ (wi); compare the two in the table below.

Why ㅚ looks the way it does

ㅚ is ㅗ and ㅣ (i) written together, and its name is 외. Its romanization oe comes from those two parts.

Reading ㅚ (oe) means reading its two parts in a smooth slide, not as two separate sounds.
