하 opens 하나 (one), 하루 (one day) and 하늘 (sky), three words that beginners meet very early.
The opening consonant of this block is made with the throat, and its sound is like h, as in hat.
하 with a final consonant
| Block | Reading | Final |
|---|---|---|
| 학 | hak | ㄱ = k |
| 한 | han | ㄴ = n |
| 할 | hal | ㄹ = l |
| 함 | ham | ㅁ = m |
| 합 | hap | ㅂ = p |
| 항 | hang | ㅇ = ng |
With 하 (ha), six common endings turn this block into 학 (hak), 한 (han), 할 (hal), 함 (ham), 합 (hap), 항 (hang).
For 하 (ha), the endings reduce to these sounds: ㄱ = k, ㄴ = n, ㄹ = l, ㅁ = m, ㅂ = p, ㅇ = ng.
Add ㄱ under 하 and you get 학 (hak), closing on a quiet k. Add ㄴ under 하 and you get 한 (han), closing on a hummed n. Add ㄹ under 하 and you get 할 (hal), closing on a tongue-tip l.
Add ㅁ under 하 and you get 함 (ham), closing on a lip-closed m. Add ㅂ under 하 and you get 합 (hap), closing on a lip-closed p. Add ㅇ under 하 and you get 항 (hang), closing on the ng of song.
ㅎ with other vowels
The consonant ㅎ (hieut) stays the same in this row while the vowel changes: 하 (ha), 허 (heo), 호 (ho), 후 (hu), 흐 (heu), 히 (hi).
하 next to 파 and 가
Compare 하 too with 파 (pa): that consonant is made with both lips and gives a strong puff of air.
